The day before the game, North Carolina coach Roy Williams assured that not too much attention would be paid to the students.
"It's usually a lot worse than you thought or nowhere near what you thought," Williams said. "We're going to spend more time trying to guard the screen on the ball than worry about people with painted faces.

Angelic Eyes -
While recruiting, Coach K told the then 15 year old DeMarcus Nelson that he had 'angelic eyes'.
Yes, you read that correct. Here's the article.
'Angelic Eyes'
Can you imagine any other coach using that line on a recruit?
Perhaps even more shocking is that K has used this line once before to describe a player. On page 10 of his book 5 point play he describes Chris Duhon:
'...Shows great concern for his teammates; even though he could be a star, he wants their respect, love, and friendship. When he looks into your eyes, he's almost angelic.'
Coach K is apparently very fond of DeMarcus Nelson. This is an excerpt from an Chronicle Article on Nelson
"Coach K has never in his life reacted in the way he reacted to DeMarcus," said DeMarcus' father Ron Nelson in a May 30 article in the Vallejo Times-Herald. "They said he went home and told his wife he finally found someone he fell in love with on sight."
Scared Yet? Keep in mind that this is only what's printed.. Who knows what else K has said over the years?
update Dec. 1st, 2003:
In this interview, Demarcus was actually asked about angel eyes! Here is his response:
I think you are referring to something that Coach K said about my eyes. It was like my eyes were innocent. He made that comment the first time we met. It was like I was very attentive & he was talking about my stance & the way I was looking at him eye to eye & my eyes followed him around wherever he went.

Shelden Williams -
Sometimes there's nothing better than just quoting from various articles!
From a Charlotte Observer article (now purged):
The headlines were huge. The implications were bad. Newspaper accounts out of Columbus, Ohio, in January 2002 reported a 19-year-old woman's accusations against five players from the visiting Midwest City (Okla.) High basketball team. According to the official police report, the accusation was rape.Williams was among the accused. Big headline.
The Mid-Del School District in Oklahoma suspended the players from school for 10 days -- another headline.
Midwest City kicked them off the team -- another headline.
A few weeks later the woman dropped her complaint, telling Columbus police the media scrutiny had become overwhelming. Columbus police Lt. David Perkins, who oversees the detective division that handles crimes against persons, said the investigation continued, then fizzled, then stopped.
From a Duke Student Newspaper article:
We were in our room getting ready to go to bed, and someone came in, and things got out of hand, and then Coach came in and broke it up," Williams said in a telephone interview.
He declined to elaborate, but said he still hopes to attend Duke and has been in contact with head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
"I talked to Coach K. He told me to keep my head up, and he's praying for me," Williams said.
From an editorial in Duke's Student Newspaper that is about Shelden and Sean Dockery.
The general feeling is that we would like 1,500 smart students with 12 great basketball players to win their games for them.
If that's true, fine, I don't agree, but so be it. Let's just stop masking it in this "great mix of academics and athletics" malarkey that schools use as one of their selling points.
This is not the way this fourth generation Dukie grew up viewing his favorite team, nor is it the thing about which Dick Vitale continually boasts every chance he gets.
From this newsok.com article (now purged)
The victim decided to focus on school once the court
process was explained to her. She may have decided
not to waste her time since there may not be enough
evidence, and since only Shelden out of the 5 isn't a
minor, most of them might have escaped harsh
punishment anyway. This is not an indication that the
5 aren't guilty, obviously 5 huge basketball players
would have no problems whatsoever restraining without
bruising and muffling any sounds while raping a girl
and leaving zero evidence it wasn't consensual. For
those that assume she made a false accusation, why on
earth would she lie and commit a felony and want to
ruin the lives of 5 people she just met and put
herself through hell for no reason?
This never seems to happen to famous or rich NBA
athletes or celebrities who get lots of money hungry
groupies, except for Mike Tyson and Duke alum William
Kennedy Smith, who wasn't famous at the time. This
incident is another embarassment along with the Duke
football player who committed armed robbery on someone
in a wheelchair shortly after coach Franks was hired.
It's really not a good sign when a university like
Duke tops even the NBA and every other pro league in
stomach turning incidents involving its athletes, and
it needs to stop.
This is obviously much more than a basketball issue,
the reputation of the university and basketball
program is thousands of times more important than
whether one player is at Duke for a year or two. The
reputation of Duke is so much more important in this
case that the opinions of those not affiliated with
the university are really not important. Would
bandwagon fans really want Shelden at Duke along with
all the troubles and distractions if he wasn't even a
top 1000 recruit or if he was just a normal student?
Of course not, that makes no sense, Shelden to Duke
would be even worse and makes no sense to intelligent
people who care about more than winning.
From an Herald-Sun Article:
A 19-year-old Ohio woman who accused three Midwest
City basketball players of rape told a Columbus
television station Wednesday that she won't ask
prosecutors to pursue charges.
But the woman's decision doesn't rule out the
possibility of charges being filed. Police could still
turn the evidence over to a grand jury for
consideration...
..."Prosecuted or not, they know exactly what they
did, and they have to live with that," she told the
television station.
Shelden also has an interesting appearance.
